Vusi Kunene was born on April 12, 1966, in Meadowlands, Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa. He was actually born on Friday the 13th, but one of the nurses thought this was bad luck and changed it to the 12th.

Vusi grew up in a poor family and developed a passion for acting at a young age.

He attended Shell Road to Fame School of the Arts, where he discovered his love for the theatre arts. In 1991, he enrolled at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, where he studied Dramatic Art. He starred in many stage productions during his time at the university, such as The Hill.
